Scientific Rationale

The IFAS10 school will bring together students from different horizons, expose them to high-level specialized lectures, and propose them to carry-on a six-days research project. The primary subject of the present school is IFU: 3D spectroscopy. The topics range from data-reduction techniques, data analysis and modelling. The school gives preference to doctoral students and advanced master's students, without geographic restrictions

IFAS10 is the tenth edition of a series of schools co-organized by the Center for Research in Astrophysics Lyon (CRAL) and the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune, India. The first edition was held in 2015 in Pune. Subsequent schools have been hosted between Lyon and Pune every other year, and every year we host students from all over the world. This year, the school will be hosted at IUCAA in Pune, India from 3 – 10 Nov, 2025.

The Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (CRAL) has been a pioneer in 3D, or integral field spectroscopy, and designed and assembled the MUSE spectrograph now in operation at the ESO's VLT. This is one of the largest and most advanced IFU spectrographs, and it has opened a new era of blind spectroscopic surveys, where, rather than targeting pre-selected sources, entire new classes of objects can be discovered out of deep fields. IUCAA is coordinating major efforts to develop theoretical and observational astronomy in India, including space-based astronomy, international projects, like the TMT, and gravitational waves, LIGO-India.

Lectures and hands-on data reduction tutorials will be given during the morning sessions, and research projects will be proposed to the participants, in smaller groups supported by a tutor. The school will be concluded by a presentation of the results of these projects.

Around 20 participants will be selected. The organizers may provide a partial or full waiver of the school registration fee on demand and justification. Please contact the school organizers (ifas10 at sciencesconf.org) to provide your justification in case you need financial support.

Registration

Registration for IFAS10 is open!

Deadline: Aug 15th, 2025

The registration fee of 3000 INR includes full board accommodation and is to be paid only after acceptance to the school. The school can offer limited travel grants (to Indian and French students) and/or a discounted rate to those justifying it and subject to availability of funds.

Early applications are an advantage if a grant is requested.

To registration process is as follows:

  1. Create an account and fill in all necessary information. Then submit.
  2. You will receive an e-mail with a validation link. After validation, you can now connect and update your information.
  3. After the deadline, we will inform you about the outcome no later than Sep 15th.
  4. If you request financial support, send an e-mail to the organizers with your justification. Please note that we cannot guarantee financial support in all cases.

The organization of the school would not have been possible without the financial support of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy ans Astrophysics (IUCAA) and the LABEX Lyon Institute of Origins (ANR-10-LABX-0066) of the University Claude Bernard of Lyon (UCBL) within the program "Investissements d'Avenir" (ANR-11-IDEX-0007) of the French government operated by the National Research Agency (ANR). The school is also partly funded by the Scientific Council of the Observatory of Lyon and by the Accueil Enseignants-chercheurs 2024 programme of the University of Lyon 1.
